Essential oils
Treatment
Got an ailment? Chances are, there’s an essential oil for it. Essential oils are highly concentrated compounds made from plants. How concentrated are they, exactly? Here’s just one example: it takes 220 pounds of lavender flowers to make just one pound of lavender essential oil. So yeah, they’re potent! An essential oil retains the plant’s scent, flavor, and most important, its healing properties. The practice of using essential oils is sometimes called aromatherapy, and there are dozens of essential oils with therapeutic properties out there. Commonly used ones include tea tree, lavender, frankincense, lemon, and peppermint. The aroma molecules in essential oils are potent plant chemicals with a variety of properties ranging from antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, to glandular, emotional, and psychological. When these scent molecules are inhaled, they send biological signals to receptor cells in the nose, which are then relayed to the brain. In other words, the smell matters!
