Insomnia / Restless sleep
Symptom
You know it’s important to get a good night’s sleep, especially while your body is trying to heal…and that thought only adds to your stress when you spend the night tossing and turning. If the idea of a good night’s sleep feels like a funny joke at this point, trust us—you are not alone! Invisible illness and stress can totally mess up your sleep cycle, especially if you have an autoimmune condition. So can depression, anxiety, or any type or pain. What helps? Avoid caffeine at least six hours before bed, and to try your best to keep stress—which interferes with all aspects of your life, including sleep quality—under control. Studies show that deep, slow, controlled breathing is a powerful tool for helping you relax and maybe even doze off. If deep breathing seems impossible right now (hey, we get it!), try a yoga or meditation class to get your chill vibe back. Some people say natural, non-habit-forming remedies such as melatonin, St. John’s wort, kava, valerian, and passion flower can also help you get some zzzs, and an herbalist can help you find the supplement (or blend of supplements) that works best for you and your needs. Finally, you can try a soothing cup of chamomile tea at night, and a few drops of lavender essential oils on your pillow. Sweet dreams!
