Diarrhea
Symptom
That telltale gurgling in your stomach can be one of the *wooorst* feelings. You know that you’re about to experience a GI catastrophe, and there’s nothing you can do about it—except find the bathroom, pronto! We’re not afraid to get real here, so let’s be specific: technically, diarrhea is defined as having loose stools three or more times in one day. If it’s a chronic issue, it can lead to dehydration and other problems. It can also signal that something more complicated is going on, from an autoimmune condition to a parasite infection. In fact, the runs are a telltale sign of many autoimmune conditions, including lupus, Crohn's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. No, diarrhea definitely isn’t fun, but it might help point you to the larger issue. To help ease your symptoms and recover from your diarrhea as quickly as possible, drink plenty of fluids and avoid spicy, fatty, or high-fiber foods for the time being. Probiotics can also help. Check in with your practitioner if your diarrhea continues for several days or is accompanied by a fever, abdominal pain, dehydration, or stools that contain blood or pus or appear black and tarry. And don’t stress or be embarrassed! Not only is diarrhea treatable, it’s happened to almost all of us.
